Manors needed to be protected. Three things that protected the manor are first of all, the huge wall. It would be hard to get over that big of a wall. Second, the moat protects the castle. In all the movies crocodiles or some kind of creature lurks in the moat, so I'm guessing that nobody really thought that swimming the moat was safe. Lastly, The drawbridge protects the manor. You could open and close it an I bet it was pretty secure.

Good or Bad?
I think that Charlemagne had a bad impact during this time period because first of all he killed tons and tons of Saxons just because they wouldn't convert to Christianity. Second of all, it was good that he reduced chaos at the beginning of the empire, but when he died things just went back to the way it was. He should have been smarter than that to actually consider what would happen after he died. So actually most of the work he did was for nothing. He was a good ruler, and did many good things but he had his fair share of bad actions too.
